I am a graduate of Reading University with an honours degree in Typography
and Graphic Communication. Having studied typography using metal type,
I started working life in a 'pre-Mac' world of drawing boards, paste up and
dark rooms. I understand the traditional working methods of the graphic
designer, and the processes that help define a good approach to both
design theory, and the implementation of design through to production
and successful completion of a project.
Early in my career I worked for small advertising agencies and design
consultancies, and as the Mac emerged and changed our world, I moved to
work in publishing and learnt my trade through using the rapidly expanding
number of design software packages, various versions of Mac and PC hardware,
and the numerous storage and distribution methods that have emerged.
My work includes book design, corporate brochures and corporate identity work,
annual report and accounts, marketing and promotional material, and other
freelance graphic design work.
I have worked for over 25 years in publishing. Starting out as a book designer
of illustrated trade books, I then went on to work on limited editions,
facsimiles, fine art books, book clubs and in academic book publishing.
